Being the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan, Punakha Dzong, or some call it Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness), is also the country’s most gorgeous and majestic dzong. Punakha is accessible from a 3 hours drive east of the capital Thimpu, and after crossing a pass in the mountains, the place is a breathtaking and glorious sight on the first glimpse from the road.
Gangtey Valley in winter the valley of Gangtey is one of the most stunning valleys in the Himalayas, and many call it the Shangri-La of Bhutan, just as how Bhutan is well known for being “one of the world’s happiest nations,” and “the last Shangri-La on Earth.” This moderate trek visits the villages of Gogona and Khotokha, passing through meadows and fields, then forests of juniper, magnolia and rhododendrons, which will be in full bloom in April.
After breakfast drive to Paro and on the way visit Paro Dzong located on the rocky outcrop of the steep hillside overlooking both sides of the valley drive back to the town.
After breakfast drive till the base of the world-famous Tiger’s Nest, clings to a sheer, 900m above the ground which is the most popular spiritual heritage sites. There is a belief that the legend Padma Sambhava flew here from Tibet on the back of a tiger. On the way to town visit Kyichu Lhakhang one of Bhutan’s two oldest and most sacred monasteries dating from the introduction of Buddhism in the 7th century. Rest of the day at leisure or visit the town for shopping. O/n at Paro.

After breakfast drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass, stop at Druk Wangyal Chorten from here you could have a panoramic view of the Himalayan mountain range when the weather is clear. Drive further down to Lamperi stop and explore Royal Botanical Park for few minutes and proceed to Punakha. On the way stop and visit Chimmi Lhakhang temple or take a short walk. Afternoon visit the majestic Punakha Dzong and rest of the day at leisure. O/n at Punakha.
After early breakfast drive to Gangtey valley via old Wangdi town. The drive is to cooler climes of Gangtey the drive is dramatic due to range of scenic beauty that unfolds along its route.During summers the hill slopes are covered with pink, white and red rhododendrons and you may even encounter some yak the old barking deer or red panda. This valley is one of the most beautiful open valleys in Bhutan and Gangtey is the winter home to the endangered black necked cranes (Grus Nigricllis) which migrate to this valley around mid November from Tibet. The birds fly back across the Himalayas to their summer home towards Tibet and China (Nov – March). Evening return to Wangdi. O/n at Wangdi.
